Mike started fencing in 1988 at the University of Waterloo, where he competed in all 3 weapons, coached, became the fencing club president and completed his NCCP level 1 coaching certification. He then coached at the RA Les Spadassins Fencing Club in Ottawa in 1995-96 before moving to Toronto in the spring of 1996. He then became a member of the Beaches Sabre Club where he has been teaching and training and competing at the national level in Sabre.
Mike has also taught at the Canadian Fencing Academy in Oakville since 2003.
In 2004, Mike re-certified under the new CBET (Competency Based Education and Training) model for coaching in both foil and sabre. He is currently working on his epee certification.
